Ford. Select Make. F-150. Select Model. Ford's legendary F-Series premiered in the late '40s with the F1, the F2, and the F3. The F1 was a ½ ton light pickup, while the 2 and the 3 represented steps up in size (the F2 was ¾ ton and the F3 was a Heavy-Duty version of the F2). This was still in the somewhat 'early' days of the American pickup truck industry and the F-Series represented a marked improvement over Ford's previous entrants, even offering a V8 with the first generation that threw out 100 horsepower.

And over the next 30 years, the F-Series would evolve even more, seeing changes to not only the drivetrain parts, but of course to the size and shape of the model, as well as to its accessories. In 1975, the debuted as a half-ton pickup, taking up the roster spot between Ford's F-100 and F-250. The truck was an instant success, accounting for over a third of all Ford F-Series truck sales in its first year on the road. It would also be the beginning to one of Ford's most prized accomplishments in the history of the company.

Once the 1980s hit, the F-150 was a prime time part of the show. There were certain changes to the Ford F-150 parts, most notably the hood was angled towards the rear and the SuperCab's windows were now split to show off the appearance of twin windows. In 1983, the engine options began to take on added size. A 7.5L V8 and 6.7L diesel V8 were offered. This was also the last year Ford would assemble the F-100, meaning that the F-150 was now the base truck. 1987 brought on even more changes to Ford F-150 parts.

The front-end displayed revised accessories, such as a rectangular grille and flush headlights that required only removing the bulb upon replacement, not the entire headlight. Anti-lock rear brakes were also added, as was a 4.9L inline 6-cylinder engine with fuel injection. Within a year, all engine options would be fuel-injected. In 1990, 'Touch Drive' was implemented. 'Touch Drive' allowed the drivers to go into 4-wheel drive mode by simply pushing a dashboard-mounted button.

As the '90s progressed, the Ford F-150 became even more aerodynamically styled. The nose was smoothed out and the bumpers were slanted back. Ford F-Series trucks had become the highest selling model in the industry with the F-150 leading the way. That made the need for safety features even more pressing. In 1994, a driver's side airbag and side door beams became standard Ford F-150 parts. 1995 saw the arrival of the Eddie Bauer F-150 Edition.

Outfitted with alloy wheels, power windows and locks, and painted in two-tone colors, it was a 'luxury' version of the F-150 and did better than expected in terms of overall sales. Currently, the Ford F-150 is still at the top of the heap. It is equipped with a 4.6L V8 (245 horsepower), a higher output 4.6L V8 (292 horsepower), or a 5.4L V8 (310 horsepower).

Ford F150 Front End Parts

There are seven trim levels available covering bed lengths, cab sizes, and driveline configurations, giving interested drivers of this truck more than enough possibilities to choose from. Even in a climate when sales of trucks dwindled due to the economic downturn, the F-150 still held its ground. Now bolder and more convenient than ever, the Ford F-150 still provides a fistful of results with the legacy to back it up. One of the most popular vehicles of all time, the Ford F-150 truly knows no boundaries. Still going strong after 10 generations, the complete F-Series helped define the terrain for all modern pickups. The F-150 has been a steady reminder of just what Ford can be capable of, and the model's redesigned look and capability rewarded the brand. The F-150 remains one of the only trucks to have ever received the Motor Trend Truck of the Year (2004), North American Truck of the Year (2004), and Car & Driver Best Pickup Truck (2004, 2005) all within the span of two years.

Depending on the model of your F-150, Ford states your truck came with a ground clearance of either 8.8” or 9.4”. For many truck owners that just isn’t enough height. Ground clearance is important for tackling obstacles on or off-road without binding up your drivetrain or sustaining damage to the underbody, making your truck more capable as a fun off-roader or as a reliable work vehicle. Along with increased performance off-road, increasing ground clearance give your truck a beefier, meaner look. A leveling kit will simply raise the front of your F-150 two to three inches to make the front even with the rear or the rear even with the front. This is important for a variety of reasons. For starters they create a smoother ride since your vehicle sits more level.

Secondly, they are excellent for adjusting your truck's ride after adding weight to the front end of your truck. F-150 leveling kits are very similar to body lifts, just with a different purpose. Leveling kits are offered to fix lift issues and make the vehicle level whereas body lifts increase lift all around. Leveling kits are usually used when truck owners add bumpers, lights, etc and increase weight on the front of the vehicle. This added weight takes a toll on your suspension, and adding a leveling kit can distribute the weight easier, removing stress on the lift/suspension. In short, because of towing. The front end of your F-150 sits lower than the bed, so when you add the weight of a trailer and cargo the truck sits level. If you're planning on using your truck to tow, you'll want to consider a lift kit instead of a leveling kit to make sure you don't hamper your towing ability.

Front

A dedicated show truck can make excellent use of a leveling kit for a more stream lined appearance. A leveling kit is also useful for owners who don't want extra height, but instead want a better ride down the highway. An F-150 body lift will raise the nose and cab up from the frame, but this won’t do a whole lot for your ground clearance (if that’s your main goal). Body lifts will lift your body off the frame allowing you to run. Ford F-150 body lifts will not increase ground clearance unless you also increase tire size.

Essentially, a body lift is a first step to increasing clearance. A body lift plus bigger tires will get you slightly further off the ground, but remember your suspension hasn't been altered. You'll look taller without actually being taller. If your main goal is to increase ground clearance under the axle than an F-150 suspension lift along with increasing your tire size is the only way to do it. A F-150 lift kit will give you the most ground clearance while also allowing you more room for bigger wheels. The bigger wheel will add even more clearance to your F-150. It’s important to keep in mind when going through with a suspension lift that when it isn’t done properly, it can do some serious damage to your front end suspension components.

A combination of a lift kit and increasing your will give you the most ground clearance. Keep in mind some states only allow a maximum clearance increase of 4” (2” on tires and 2” on suspension or lifts). The reasoning is these alterations shift the truck’s center of gravity which makes the vehicle more likely to roll over.

Also in the event of a collision, your face a greater risk of rolling over the other car rather than the bumper colliding with the other vehicle.
